How do Dermal Fillers work?
Dermal fillers work by filling in the skin where lines and wrinkles have formed, effectively smoothing them out. They’re also great for contouring the features of the face.
There are a variety of fillers available on the market. The majority of them contain hyaluronic acid as their primary ingredient. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance in the body that diminishes with age. The ability of Hyaluronic acid to hold more than its own weight in water helps to add both fullness and hydration when injected into the skin, producing the smooth, supple, youthful appearance that many of us desire. HA also helps boost collagen production, which aids in providing more long-term results.
What areas can be treated with fillers?
Fillers can provide beautiful, natural-looking results in the following areas:
- Cheeks
- Lips
- Ear lobes
- Jaw
- Chin
- Hands
- Much more
Who is a good candidate for treatment with dermal fillers?
Those wishing to restore lost volume, diminish deeper lines and wrinkles, and contour their facial features may be great candidates for treatment with dermal fillers. While fillers are often a great way to achieve facial rejuvenation for people of varying ages and skin types, people experiencing more advanced signs of aging and skin laxity may not achieve optimal results with dermal fillers. This can be determined upon initial consultation.
Do Dermal Fillers require any downtime?
Most people who get filler injections resume their normal activities as soon as treatment is done. We do recommend, however, that you avoid any strenuous physical activity for the first 24-48 hours to help minimize any swelling or bruising, which are potential side effects of injections. In most cases, any swelling or bruising can be alleviated by applying ice to the treatment area periodically.
What kind of results can I expect from Dermal Fillers?
Though most people see some improvement in the treatment area right away, it often takes a few days to a week following injections for the full skin-smoothing effects to show. You may experience some slight swelling, bruising, or redness at the injection sites, but these are generally mild and resolve in a few days.
The effects of fillers are temporary, so treatment must be repeated to maintain the best results. Depending on the type of filler used, where it’s injected, and your own body chemistry, fillers can last anywhere from 6-18 months.
